The logs on the fire fill me with desire

December 22, 2012 | My Jottings

This is a true blast from my past.

So I’ve decided to take an informal little poll. What’s your feeling about this old Christmas song by the Carpenters?

Love it? Hate it? Never heard it?

I will share what I think of it after all the results from this important poll are computed.

Okay….cast your vote!ย  ๐Ÿ™‚

  1. Ganeida says:

Oh, Julie! I am ambivilant about The Carpenters. I think they have a most wonderful sound but for the most part I don’t like their music. Consequentially it drives me nuttier than usual because I can never make up my mind whether to just enjoy the sound or go crazy about the bits I hate.

It was an era when there were lots of good harmonies & I think people chose the camp that suited them best. I was a Mammas & the Pappas girl so the Carpenters, The Beach Boys, The BeeGees, The Seekers, Peter, Paul & Mary, all left me somewhat cold. I still get goosebumps when Mamma Cass really gets going. lol

Thank you for weighing in Ganeida! I had my favorites too – more to come. xxoo

  3. Kay in UK says:

Alan and I are both Carpenters fans, but neither of us could remember this one. And guess what, Julie? Alan and I have been married for over four years now and we’d never danced together until I played the clip on this post and when I invited Alan to dance with me, he did! He said it was lovely! Thank you for an extra special Christmas gift.
    xxxxxxx to you and Michael!

  4. Kay in UK says:

Oh, and we both loved the song, too! xx

  5. Just Julie says:

How sweet to picture you and Alan dancing to Merry Christmas Darling, Kay! This is on their Carpenters Christmas Album, and it is played a lot in the U.S. at Christmas time. Thank you for your opinion! xxoo

  6. Mariel says:

I love the Carpenters! They are on my ipod and I play them every Christmas. I had all their albums when I was growing up. I love all the old classics. I remember my mom playing the Ray Conniff singers at Christmas and I also have them on my ipod. At this very moment I am watching The Sound Of Music. (there’s a commercial on right now) I love nostalgia. ๐Ÿ™‚

  7. Just Julie says:

Thank you for your “vote” too, Mariel! My mom played all the old classics on her Hammond B3 organ, so I feel like many of them are in my blood. And I LOVE the sound of music, and have often wished I were Julie Andrews, so I could spin in the Austrian Alps, be kind and beautiful and innocent and musical all day long, and all that. ๐Ÿ™‚ God bless your Christmas, Mariel… xxoo

  8. Dorothy Sooter says:

It was the first time I heard that song. I loved it and thought of
your dad. When I met your dad I heard a song on the radio,
the title I believe was I Want To Dance With You The Rest Of My
Life. I loved that song, have not heard it for a long time. This
song reminded me of it, thank you.

  9. Just Julie says:

Thank you Dorothy. I wonder if the song you are thinking of was Can I Have This Dance For the Rest of My Life by Anne Murray? If so, I have always thought that was a touching one.

Even though I was a rock ‘n’ roll fan when I was young, and I didn’t own any albums by The Carpenters, I have grown to love their music. I love their Christmas album, and always turn it up when Merry Christmas Darling plays. ๐Ÿ™‚

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you, dear Dorothy. Each year brings us a little closer to Heaven…
